What is GYNAECARE PROLIFT?
This is a minimally invasive procedure which delivers a uniquely designed supportive soft mesh into the pelvis to restore support for pelvic organ which have prolapsed.
How does GYNAECARE PROLIFT work?
Through small incisions in the groins, buttocks and the vagina, the soft mesh is inserted into carefully identified surgical landmarks in the pelvis to cover the areas where the defects occur. The mesh is held in place by friction created by the strap-like arms of the mesh going through the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. In time, new tissues grow into the pores of the mesh to create a new support system replacing the damaged tissues.
How is GYNAECARE PROLIFT different from other surgical alternatives?
In traditional repair surgery, surgeons mend the torn or damaged connective tissues by plication using mostly absorbable suture materials. The GYNAECARE PROLIFT system is unique in its concept of using surgically implantable and permanent materials to replace the defective connective tissue layers wherever they occur in the pelvis. In doing so it promises to improve the long-term results of pelvic floor repair in the same way that mesh has done for inguinal and incisional hernial repair.
What types of pelvic organ prolapse are GYNAECARE PROLIFT suitable for?
GYNAECARE PROLIFT is suitable for correction of cystocoele, rectocoele and uterine prolapse. Early evidence indicates that this system is able to correct these types of prolapse with great success and without the need for hysterectomy.
What are the benefits of GYNAECARE PROLIFT?
The procedure takes less time, patients appear to experience less pain, quicker recovery, and are able to leave hospital and return to normal activities quicker than traditional surgery.
What are the risks of GYNAECARE PROLIFT?
No surgical procedure is risk-free and this is true of GYNAECARE PROLIFT also. Experience to date indicates that complications are rare and may include injury to bladder, bowel, blood vessels and nerves of the pelvis. Like any surgically implantable materials, there is also a small risk of mesh extrusion, inflammation, infection, and scars causing painful intercourse.
Is Gynaecare prolift right for me?
As every individual patient has different types of pelvic floor defects, different tissue quality, different health status, and different expectations, you should consult with your own specialist to determine if GYNAECARE PROLIFT is right for you.
